چکیده

Radar backscatter of power lines has lower values than those of the surrounding ground clutter when the power line is oriented at an off-normal direction with respect to the radar line of sight. For power lines, the traditional detection algorithms that are commonly based on the statistics of the backscatter power of the clutter and target result in excessive false-alarm rates due to very low signal-to-clutter ratio. In this paper, the application of a statistical polarimetric detection algorithm that significantly improves the signal-to-clutter ratio is demonstrated. The coherence between the coand cross-polarized backscatter components is used as the detection parameter. This statistical detection parameter can be applied to any extended targets such as a suspended cable in clutter background. Detection criteria based on clutter backscattering coefficients, power line size, and aspect angle, as well as the number of independent samples are obtained. The performance of the algorithm for mapping power lines in SAR images is demonstrated using a number of low-grazing incidence polarimetric SAR images at 35 GHz.

Millimeter-Wave Radar Phenomenology of Power Lines and a Polarimetric Detection Algorithm

In this paper, the radar phenomenology of highvoltage power lines and cables is studied for examining the feasibility of detecting power lines along the path of a low-flying aircraft using a millimeter-wave radar system. For this purpose, polarimetric backscatter measurements of power line samples of different diameters and strand arrangements were performed over a wide range of incidence angle...

Edge and Line Detection in Polarimetric SAR Images

A new scheme for detecting edges and lines in multichannel SAR images is proposed. The line detector is constructed from the edge detector. The latter is based on multivariate statistical hypothesis tests applied to log-intensity SAR images. The raw results are vectorized by a traditional bright line extraction process. The scheme is illustrated by extracting dark linear structures on various f...

Microwave Imaging Using SAR

Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (Pol.-SAR) allows us to implement the recognition and classification of radar targets. This article investigates the arrangement of scatterers by SAR data and proposes a new Look-up Table of Region (LTR). This look-up table is based on the combination of (entropy H/Anisotropy A) and (Anisotropy A/scattering mechanism α), which has not been reported up now. ...
